Samsung Teases Upcoming Smartphone Emphasizing AI Integration

Samsung is set to unveil its latest smartphone model, highlighting a significant emphasis on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).

The tech giant, widely recognized for producing the highest volume of smartphones globally, has announced the debut of its new Galaxy S series phone during the forthcoming Unpacked event scheduled for January 17. This launch is positioned as heralding a “new era of mobile AI.”

Anticipated as the precursor to a surge in AI-powered smartphones, Bloomberg reported that more than 1 billion such devices are projected to be shipped over the next three years, according to data from Counterpoint Research.

Building upon last year’s pivotal ChatGPT-led advancements, the next phase in AI promotion involves embedding this technology into devices, a development that United States chipmaker Qualcomm has been actively exploring. Counterpoint researchers highlight Samsung and Qualcomm as immediate leaders due to their existing product capabilities, positioning them as pioneers in integrating AI into smartphones. Samsung’s success in the foldables segment suggests a potential capture of nearly 50% market share in the next two years, followed by significant Chinese OEMs such as Xiaomi, Vivo, Honor, and Oppo.

These revelations precede the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where AI is expected to transition from the realm of engineering and technology to a focal point within the consumer landscape. Samsung and Qualcomm are among the key players poised to exhibit their AI-centric products at CES, symbolizing a shift towards a consumer-oriented AI paradigm.

Unlike previous CES events that emphasized technologies like 5G and the metaverse, this year’s focus on AI is notably more pragmatic. Consumer Electronics Show research highlights an increasing integration of AI into everyday activities among consumers.

Concurrently, the smartphone market is recuperating from its most challenging year in the last decade. In this context, device manufacturers might leverage AI integration as a strategy to bolster sales by aligning with the current electronics trend. Strategies may involve optimizing AI systems for battery-powered devices or relying on cloud-hosted AI systems that utilize broadband connections. This strategic approach could potentially drive smartphone sales amidst a competitive market landscape.
