MSI is one of the leading manufacturers when it comes to powerful gaming laptops, graphics cards, and motherboards. Today, we review the MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro that features the latest processor/GPU and finds out if the laptop can cope up with today’s modern PC games. We thank MSI Middle East for this opportunity.
Design and Display
Just like many other gaming laptops, the MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro features a killer-instinct looking design to match the attitude of a hardcore gamer. The lid and the palm-rest of the machine holds a smooth black surface with the hairline finish that gives a premium feel.
With such an expensive model, you would surely expect the laptop to offer a variety of ports. On the left, you would find two USB 3.0 ports, one USB Type-C port, one Mini-Display port (v1.2), an HDMI 1.4, and a fast Killer E2400 Gigabit LAN connection. On the right, you will find the optical BlueRay/DVD drive, a USB 2.0, and power connections.
On the front, you get the DynAudio powered dual speakers, which sounded really loud during gaming. For better cooling efficiency, the laptop features Cooler Boost 3 dual thermal fan vents on the rear which is a good practice when it comes to laptop cooling. You can crank up the speed of the fans using the one-click fan boost button.
The MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro isn’t any different when it comes to gaming keyboards. The laptop features the SteelSeries branded multi-color, gamer focused keyboard. The keys offer a great response and tactile feedback while gaming.
The laptop holds a great looking 17-inch “wide-angle” IPS panel that’s claimed to offer 20% more contrast and brightness than a TN panel. We wouldn’t agree more, as the viewing angles are great, but yeah, you look straight head-on while gaming.
Last but not least, MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro weighs about 2.9 Kg.
Chipset and Performance
A gaming laptop is worth its hefty price if it holds the best specifications for a smooth gameplay experience. The MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro is powered by a Skylake based Intel i7-6700HQ processor, 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 128GB Toshiba SSD running Windows 10 Pro/Home, a 1TB secondary HDD to store your games, and main spotlight of the laptop- the NVIDIA GTX 970M GPU with 3GB GDDR5 RAM.
The GTX 970M GPU is classed in between the mid-high range of graphics processors, so you can expect some great gaming performance with this chip (but not the best). We used 3D Mark FireStrike, PC Mark 11, and a few games to benchmark the performance of the system. So far, our gaming performance went well without much noticeable framerate lag, as long as you keep the settings to just high, and not cranking it up all the way to max.
The MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro holds a 6-cell battery inside. Now with respect to gaming hardware, running games require a good amount of power, and gaming with a battery will easy zap out all the juice in less than one hour (not to mention that the GPU performance is reduced when in battery mode). That said, the laptop can last for almost 2-3 hours for normal tasks and applications.
With our experience, the MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro is quite a beast when it comes to gaming performance. It’s even surprisingly light for a 17-inch laptop, with an aggressive looking design that means it's ready to game.
While gaming laptops are usually sold at ridiculous prices (above AED 14,000) which make anyone normal user to think twice before buying, MSI sells their gaming laptops at a lower rate than their competitors. The MSI GE72 6QF Apache Pro is all yours for AED 7499.
