Review of Huawei P10 Plus

Huawei P10 Plus: Smartphone Photography at its Finest

While smartphone makers have been busy trying to bring new design ideas with their flagship smartphones, Huawei sticks with improving their hardware and delivering a better camera performance for the users. Check the latest review of Huawei P10 Plus here and we will be saying our thoughts about the new premium flagship device.

Design

The Huawei P10 Plus definitely felt premium on our hands with a solid build. The curved edges seamlessly flow towards the back with no sharp edges and that helps to hold the smartphone by just one hand. It’s only 7mm thick and weighs only 165g.Despite the large 5.5-inch IPS display, the power button and the volume trigger on the right side are well built and are easily reachable. Speaking of display, the screen features a resolution of 1440 x 2560 with fantastic viewing angles. However, the outdoor visibility of the display under direct sunlight in Dubai conditions is just above decent, even when the display brightness set to the maximum. That said, I’m quite impressed with the deep colors shown in the display.

thumb_201712051005592_400x225One of the few notable changes from the previous Huawei P9 smartphone is the fingerprint scanner. The scanner is now located on the front side of the device. However, the scanner doesn’t double as a Samsung-style home button as some would hope it to be. That said, most would prefer the fingerprint scanner to remain on the rear side. The rear panel has a nice textured finish with the Huawei insignia and dual-Leica lens setup has its own glass compartment. The amount of free space on the back panel still makes me wonder why Huawei couldn’t place the fingerprint scanner over there. Don’t get me wrong. Placing the fingerprint scanner on the front side isn’t a bad idea at all, but then again, the rear side is just easier to reach. The Huawei P10 Plus has a 3.5mm audio jack so that’s a relief for those who want it. It’s situated next to the USB Type-C port. There is also a single speaker grill on the bottom of the device. I also noticed that the antennae lines are uniquely designed.

With most of the flagship smartphones being IP68 certified, it’s quite disappointing to see that the Huawei P10 Plus made it to the market as a “splash resistant”- only smartphone. Yeah, it can resist a few accidental spills and water drops, but that’s about it, so do think twice before taking the smartphone 1m deep underwater.

Performance

The Huawei P10 Plus packs the latest Kirin 960 processor octa-core processor with a massive 6GB RAM for assuring a great multitasking experience. Android 7.0 Nougat runs out of the box with the Huawei Emotion UI 5.1 OS. During my time with the device, the smartphone ran smoothly with no lags while I used a lot of Chrome browsing with multiple tabs and several social media apps. Gaming with the P10 Plus is also great, thanks to the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. While our review unit features 128GB internal storage with MicroSD expansion via SIM 2 tray, Huawei also sells a 64GB model with 4GB RAM.

While I prefer stock Android, the Emotion UI 5.1 comes with several useful options like the Dual Apps that allows you to use two instances of an application such as WhatsApp. These features have already been seen on previous Huawei smartphones that still add a lot of value. Our Antutu benchmark test result of the Huawei P10 Plus is 129948 points and GeekBench 4 with 6362 points for multi-core performance.

Camera

thumb_201712051005593_400x225Now comes the most important feature of the Huawei P10 Plus. The Leica Dual Camera 2.0 Pro Edition comes with dual SUMMILUX-H lenses with an impressive f1.8 aperture. These lenses cover the 20MP+12MP mobile image sensors with optical image stabilization- a must for blur-free images. The f1.8 aperture certainly helps in night photography as well as images with clear bokeh effects. The sensors are capable of phase and contrast AF for fast and precise focusing of your subject. The camera is capable of 4K video recording at 30fps. You can also light up with the built-in dual-done flash. The front camera features a fast f1.9 aperture lens with an 8MP image sensor.

Battery

Despite the 5.5-inch display in a thin and stylish form-factor, the Huawei P10 Plus packs a large 3750 mAh battery under its hood. No, the battery is not removable. The battery lasted for a day while I used most of the essential applications, some camera clicks, calls and display brightness at 65%. Quick charging the smartphone via the USB Type-C port gave me almost 45% of battery life in just 20 minutes. The standby time for the P10 Plus lasted for four days with some slight usage and WiFi left switched on.

HUAWEI P10 PLUS REVIEW VERDICT:
Once again Huawei has proved that they are serious when it's about mobile photography. The dual-Leica setup is one of the best dual-lens smartphone cameras in the market today. While the design of the P10 Plus is better than its predecessor, its time for Huawei to focus on a better design philosophy for their next flagship since their competitors are currently trying out bezel-less smartphones. The smartphone has a 3.5mm headphone jack which is now a feature in demand, something that the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Apple iPhone 7 Plus doesn't have. With all that said, the Huawei P10 Plus is priced at AED 2599 in Dubai, UAE. We think that the price could have been a bit lower for the features it currently offers as compared to the competition.
