RTA Dubai buying 200 Tesla self-driving cars to introduce as taxis

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with Tesla Inc. to bring 200 hybrid electric vehicles fitted with autonomous driving technology. Specifically, the Tesla Model S sedans and the Model X SUVs, the cars will be added to the limousine fleet of the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC).

According to a report by Emirates News Agency, the agreement was signed by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, and Elon Musk, Chairman and CEO of Tesla. The signing took place at the World Government Summit 2017, in the presence of multiple executives and officials from both sides.

"This agreement is in sync with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the world’s smartest city, and also in line with the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative. '' said Al Tayer. The plan was also part of Dubai’s aim to transform 25% of the regular commutes in Dubai to autonomous commutes by 2030.

Earlier this week, Tesla officially launched operations in the UAE, with their website now allowing you to book your Tesla car and have it delivered in the summer.
