While Microsoft’s Surface line-up includes hybrid 2-in-1 devices with kickstands and an all-in-one PC, the Redmond company has unveiled their first traditional laptop called the “Surface Laptop” at the MicrosoftEDU event. The new product runs on a specialized version of their latest operating system called Windows 10 S.
Unlike the Surface Book or the Surface Pro 4, the Surface Laptop follows the traditional laptop form-factor. There are no kickstands or detachable screens of any kind. The new Surface Laptop is targeted towards the educational market. The Windows 10 S that comes preinstalled with the device is meant to run web apps from the Microsoft Store.
The laptop features a 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen with 2256 x 1504 resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio. The device comes with a choice of Intel’s latest 7th generation i5/i7 processors and configurations from 4GB to 16GB RAM. Storage options include 128GB, 256GB or 512GB SSD. While the laptop runs on Windows 10 S that only runs apps from the Windows Store, users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free until December 31, 2017, should they want to start using non-Windows Store apps.
The Surface Laptop weighs about 1.25kg and has a battery that’s claimed to last up to 14.5 hours of video playback. The casing is made out of aluminum and comes with dedicated buttons for power and volume. The laptop also comes with a headset jack, a mini Display port, a Surface Connect port, and a USB 3.0 port.
One of the unique features of the Surface Laptop is the keyboard that comes covered in a cloth-like material called the Alcantara fabric. The Microsoft Surface Laptop will be sold in four different colors: Burgundy, Platinum, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold. The Microsoft Laptop is expected to hit the UAE stores after June 2017 with a starting price of $999 (AED 3669).
