The new spin from the tireless rumor mill for the iPhone 8 is that the device might be getting two significant upgrades. According to Wistron CEO Robert Hawng, the iPhone 8 will be waterproof and will feature wireless charging. The rumors of these features have been going around for quite a few months, so it’s good to have some solid confirmation on this.
“Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much,” Hwang said, “though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit.
Now Wistron, which is an iPhone assembler, are reportedly tasked with assembling the iPhone 7s, so it’s safe to assume that if the device is getting the waterproof design and wireless charging, then the iPhone 8 will include them, as well.
The interesting bit here is what kind of wireless charging implementation that Apple will go for. Reports for the past few months suggest that Apple has partnered up with Broadcom over a wireless charging solution. Earlier reports, however, claim that Apple might go with a Energous solution, which apparently charges devices from a distance of up to 15 feet.
