Samsung has finally unpacked their latest rugged iteration called the Galaxy S8 Active as an exclusive for AT&T customers in the US. The device shares similar specifications as the standard Galaxy S8 series, but with some upgrades in battery life and a tougher MIL-STD-810G specification that can resist “a subset of 21 specific environmental conditions, including temperature, dust, shock/vibration, and low pressure/high altitude”, according to Samsung.
Samsung also mentions that the metal frame and bumper are capable of resisting shocks, abrasion, tilting or twisting. Samsung had to ditch its Infinity Display screen in favor of housing the new rugged body. That said, the bezels still appear to be thin and the aspect ratio is the same 18:5:9 with the 5.8-inch 1440p Super AMOLED screen. Rather than the Exynos chipset, the Galaxy S8 Active is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB RAM and an internal storage of 64GB. This can be expanded with a MicroSD card. The smartphone runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat.
The camera sensors remain the same as well. The rear camera is 12MP with the sharp f1.7 aperture. Users can record videos up to 4K resolution at 30fps. The main camera also supports phase detection AF and optical image stabilization. The fingerprint scanner is still next to the camera module. The selfie camera is an 8MP snapper, also with an f1.7 aperture. Here comes the main difference. The Galaxy S8 Active sports a large 4000 mAh battery on-board and has fast charge support via the USB Type-C port. Interestingly, the smartphone is capable of wireless charging.
Other features include the iris scanner and the heart rate sensor. We aren’t aware of the device availability in the UAE. For now, the pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 Active will start soon for users in the US for $850 (approx. AED 3122). The different color options include Camo Green, Titanium Gray and Sandy Gold.
With the unveiling of the Galaxy S8 Active, the company is also expected to announce the next flagship of the Note series, called the Galaxy Note8 smartphone later this month. The device is rumored to feature a dual-lens camera on the rear, the Infinity Display with thin bezels and 18:9 aspect ratio and the Super AMOLED display is 6.3-inch in size. The smartphone may share the same Exynos processor as the Galaxy S8 and is rumored to come with 6GB RAM. Leaks indicate that the device may feature a 3300 mAh battery.
