While Google’s Android One program was meant to offer cheap Android smartphones that run on stock Android OS, the development didn’t go that well as planned. Google decided to take it to the next level and now with the partnership of Xiaomi, has officially introduced the Xiaomi Mi A1, a smartphone with flagship-level specifications under its hood.
It’s the latest Android One device with a 5.5-inch screen with support of Full HD screen resolution. The smartphone even almost looks and feels like an Apple iPhone 7 Plus and features comparable specifications. It's not every day that you will see a dual-lens camera on an Android One device, and here, in this case, the Mi A1 features a 12MP telephoto and a 12MP wide-angle shooter mounted on the rear side of the smartphone, along with 2x optical zoom. Xiaomi also confirms that the portrait mode offers a good depth of field effects, just as the Apple iPhone 7 Plus.
However, the fingerprint scanner is mounted on the rear side. And the Mi A1 is powered by the Snapdragon 625 with 4GB RAM, a popular mobile SoC that delivers a good balance of speed and battery life. The device comes with a large 3080 mAh battery. While the internal storage is 64GB, Android One will be fully pure and there will be no signs of custom UI skins by Xiaomi. In fact, Xiaomi also confirmed that the Mi A1 will be one of the first smartphones to receive the Android P update. While it's too early to talk about it, Google and other smartphone brands have yet to roll out the Android 8.0 Oreo update, that’s expected in the next few months. And it will be another year until Android P update will be rolled out.
While India will be the first in the market to get the Xiaomi Mi A1, Xiaomi will be releasing the device to more regions, such as Asia, Europe, Central/South America and MEA. The Xiaomi Mi A1 is priced at 14,999 INR (AED 859). However, there isn’t any word on the actual release date and availability in the UAE. But if you happen to be in India, you can grab one by September 12th from popular e-retailers out there. Xiaomi is also expected to announce the successor of the Mi MIX bezel-less smartphone in the coming week.
