After all the rumors and speculations that we have been updating our readers for the last many months, Apple has officially unveiled the latest iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, along with the special Apple iPhone X, the first smartphone from the Cupertino company to feature an all-screen OLED display with super-thin bezels.
The Apple iPhone X (pronounced as iPhone 10) marks the use of advanced smartphone technologies for the future of iPhone portfolio. As indicated by previous leaks, one of the main striking features of the iPhone X is its beautiful OLED display, and it’s the first time ever Apple has used a display other than IPS on a smartphone. Since it’s also the first iPhone to have a bezel-less design, the 5.8-inch OLED screen covers the entire front portion, and there is simply no home button on the device.
Apple has completely omitted the use of the traditional Touch ID sensor for unlocking the device, which Apple calls it the gold standard in consumer products, and now depends on a front-facing facial recognition, TrueDepth camera. The technology works with a dot projector that illuminates over 30,000 invisible dots to create a facial map. The infrared camera then reads the dot patterns, captures an infrared image, and sends the data to the new Apple A11 Bionic processor to declare a confirmation. There is also a flood illuminator that is designed to identify the users face in the dark. Apple says that the camera is so advanced, it cannot be spoofed with the user’s picture or even a physical mask that closely resembles the person. The camera will recognize your face, regardless the hair style change for women, the growth of beard for men, or even with a winter dress that covers your entire face.
The all-screen OLED display seamlessly flows to the perfect curves of the device and its rounded corners. The Apple iPhone X is 7.7mm thick and the body weighs 174g. Along with the high-resolution that points at 2436 x 1125, the contrast ratio of the screen is 1,000,000:1, thanks to the OLED technology, and also brings support for HDR content. 3D Touch capability is also included.
While the Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (skipping the iPhone 7s naming scheme) may look like the previous generation, Apple did infuse the new smartphones with glass on the front and back, and Apple says that it’s the most durable glass used in a smartphone. The Apple iPhone 8 packs a 4.7-inch Retina HD display and the iPhone 8 Plus with a 5.5-inch Retina HD screen. The screen resolution of the iPhone 8 is 1334 x 750, and the iPhone 8 Plus with a screen sharpness of 1920 x 1080. Both the devices support TruTone technology and 3D Touch.
The Apple iPhone X, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus is powered by Apple’s very own Apple A11 Bionic processor, a 6-core CPU that packs Apple’s first Neural Engine and the embedded M11 coprocessor. Apple says that the new processor is 70% faster than the previous Apple A10 chip. The custom-made Apple GPU is capable of 60fps gaming on the smartphone. All the three smartphones run on the latest Apple iOS 11 system software. Additionally, the three new devices share the same IP67 certification for water and dust resistance at microscopic levels.
Looking at the camera features on the new devices, the iPhone 8 packs a new 12MP camera on the rear side with almost double the light entry. The Apple iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X features a 12MP dual-lens camera on its back panel, with the telephoto lens that has an aperture of F2.8, and the wide-angle lens with a brightness of F1.8. While the popular Portrait mode still continues, Apple introduced a new Portrait Lighting that allows users to capture photos from the front and rear camera with studio-like effects in 5 different styles.
One of the main capabilities announced is the 4K video capture at 60fps on all the iPhone X and iPhone 8/iPhone 8 Plus, and it’s definitely a first on a smartphone. The front camera holds a 7MP sensor on all the three devices. The battery capacity isn’t known for now but Apple says that the battery life of the iPhone X can last 2 hours longer than the iPhone 7. Additionally, Apple brings wireless charging capability on all the three new iPhones.
