Sony Mobile Middle East has officially announced the latest generation of their flagship smartphone series called the Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact. The launch event was taken place at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club.
The new smartphones mark the introduction of a new design philosophy for the Xperia flagship devices, that includes lesser bezels and more screen estate. The Xperia XZ2 is currently Sony’s latest offering that succeeds the previous Xperia XZ1 of last year. The new Xperia XZ2 now has a new display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The resolution has also been bumped to 1080 x 2160. Sony managed to use a larger 5.7-inch display while keeping the whole device smaller.
Speaking of which, the Xperia XZ2 Compact is the first of all the Compact Xperia devices to feature a larger display and resolution. Sony has never broken the barrier of using a 4.6-inch 720p screen. Thanks to the thinner bezels, you now get a 5-inch screen with the same resolution and aspect ratio as the bigger Xperia XZ2. Both the smartphones use Gorilla Glass 5 for scratch resistance and the displays are HDR BT 2020 compliant. Meaning, videos will pop vibrant colors, along with X-Reality and Triluminos Display enhancements.
The Xperia XZ2 Compact is also the very first in the Sony Xperia Compact series to feature Dual-SIM functionality. As for the dimensions, the Xperia XZ2 is 11.1mm thick and weighs about 198g. On the other hand, the Xperia XZ2 Compact is 12.1mm thick and weighs 168g. It’s worth noting that the previous generation of Xperia flagship smartphones was thinner and lighter. Both the smartphones are powered by the Snapdragon 845 chip and pack 4GB RAM with Android 8.0 Oreo OS. You also get 64GB of internal storage on both along with MicroSD card expansion (uses SIM-2 slot for this purpose). The Xperia XZ2 holds a 3180 mAh battery and the Xperia XZ2 Compact features a 2870 mAh battery. Both the smartphones support fast charging capability, however, only the Xperia XZ2 has the capability for wireless charging.
Another major change is the introduction of the rear-facing fingerprint scanner that appears to be always on. So, you can unlock the smartphone without the need of pressing the power button. This is a change from the side-mounted scanners that we have seen on the previous Xperia flagship models. Sony has also included a lot of camera improvements and the additions of new features, including the Full HD mode for the 960fps super-slow motion.
Sony has also featured these devices with 4K and Full HD video recording, where you can activate HDR while capturing your favorite moments. While the camera is also the same 19MP shooter that was used in the Xperia XZ1, Sony claims that the image quality and night shots have considerably improved. We will check that out in our review, which will be published soon. While both the smartphones lack the traditional 3.5mm audio jack, users will be able to connect their headphones using a USB Type-C adaptor.
The Sony Xperia XZ2 is now available for pre-orders and is priced at AED 2899 in the UAE. The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is priced at AED 2599 in the UAE. The Sony Xperia XZ2 comes in Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green and Ash Pink colors. The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact will come in White Silver, Black, Moss Green and Coral Pink colors.
