Xiaomi Mi8

After introducing next-generation designs with the Mi MIXX smartphones, Xiaomi has officially announced the Mi8, featuring a design that resembles the likes of Apple iPhone X, along with a dual-lens camera on the rear. There is a notch on the front that houses a 3D face scanner.

As one would expect, Xiaomi has equipped the Mi 8 with the latest Qualcomm processor called the Snapdragon 845. Xiaomi claims that the Mi 8 is capable of achieving an AnTuTu score of 301,472 points. While the device maybe Xiaomi’s first smartphone to feature a notch, the OLED display is 6.21-inches in size and the panel is manufactured by Samsung. The front-facing notch houses a large 20MP selfie camera. Design wise, the Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with an aluminum frame and features a 4-way cured glass rear panel. Speaking of which, the rear-facing dual-lens camera houses 12MP image sensors and bags a score of 105 points for DxOMark tests.

Xiaomi also claims that the Mi 8 is the first smartphone to feature dual-frequency GPS technology for more accurate data and location tracking. The Xiaomi Mi 8 is also the very first Android smartphone to come with 3D facial recognition technology, much like the Apple iPhone X’s Face ID. And adding to that is the inclusion of Xiaomi’s own Animoji equivalent capability on the device. There is also another special version of the smartphone called the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, that comes with a transparent back panel and an under-screen fingerprint scanner as well. Xiaomi is certainly pushing the boundaries here of what Apple couldn’t do with the iPhone X. Xiaomi also announced a cheaper version called the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. And unlike the Apple iPhone SE, the Mi 8 SE comes with a 5.88-inch OLED display and is powered by the Snapdragon 710 processor. In fact, it’s the very first smartphone to come with that processor in the market. The Snapdragon 710 is said to offer 30% efficiency and 20% better performance over the previous Snapdragon 660 chip.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 is said to be priced at $421 (Approx. AED 1546), the Explorer Edition for $577 (Approx. AED 2119) and the Mi 8 SE for $281 (Approx. AED 1032)
