MWC 2016: Xiaomi unveils world’s first commercially available Snapdragon 820 smartphone

Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi has finally launched officially its most expected Mi 5 flagship smartphone, at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC 2016) in Barcelona, Spain. USP of this handset is that it runs Google’s newest Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) straight out of the box and the fact that it is touted to be the world’s first commercially available smartphone to be driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC.

Xiaomi’s Mi 5 comes in three variants viz standard, high-end and ceramic variants, each comprising of different RAM and chipset configuration. As of now, the smartphone will be made available in China from next week, global availability is expected very shortly.

 Another notable aspect of Xiaomi’s Mi 5 is that, it has been found to weigh-in at just 129 grams; which makes it comparatively light-weight. Key features of the Xiaomi Mi 5 are:

  • 15-inch full HD display having resolutions of 1080 x 1920 pixels
  • Google Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) operating platform straight out of the box
  • Dual SIM-card support
  • 3/4GB RAM variants
  • 8GHz and 2.15GHz CPUs, varying based on RAM variants, within a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC
  • 16 MP rear camera
  • 4 MP rear camera
  • 32/64/128 GB internal storage variants
  • USB Type-C compatibility
  • 3,000 mAh battery
  • Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 (for rapid battery charging)

The Mi 5’s display incorporates the Sunlight Display technology. This innovation uses hardware-level technology to adjust the contrast of each pixel in real time. This ensures that images formed on the screen are comparatively less affected by glare. This results in overall improvement of contrast, and in maximum readability during bright sunlight conditions.

In China, Xiaomi’s Mi 5 is priced at Yuan 1,999 (AED 1,123) for the standard edition.
